Their Bengali memes have taken Kolkata by storm and in just the span of a year, they’ve gone from 0 to 2,00,000 likes! Their creatives are best described as tastefully witty, relatable AF, often thought-provoking and is Bangaliyana at its best! The Facebook page Bong Bachal needs no introduction, but do you know about the minds that work behind the page and come up with your daily dose of entertainment?
Team Beacon Kolkata caught up with the team of Bong Bachal – there are 7 creative minds working on the page – Sayantan, Annesha, Ankika, Soubhik, Santanu, Chunilal and Monalisa.
How did you come up with the name Bong Bachal?
We always wanted our work to be in Bengali, hence the ‘Bong’ and ‘Bachal’ was meant to bring out the Sukumar Ray flavour in it!
How and when did Bong Bachal begin?
We started our page in January 2017 and at the time, we had no idea that it would be this big, we only thought we’d get around 10k likes. Also, it was mostly for our friends to enjoy and like.
I (Sayantan) had some previous experience with Facebook pages, I had designed Minimalist Tollywood Posters.
Sayantan – Founder, Bong Bachal
When was the first time that you felt like the page was blowing up?
We had made this one post – ‘We are from Bengal’ and it got over 20000 likes and 10k shares. I think that’s where all the hype came in and people started noticing Bong Bachal more.
Tell us more about the team.
The original team started from 3 people and currently, we’re 7 people strong.
We are like a family. We write whenever we find the time and we all contribute to the creatives being made. We try to be innovative and relatable so that our audience can connect with us. It’s not as easy as it looks, so we often try to tweak or recreate a popular line or song so that it becomes funny or witty and people can say that we’ve put some effort into it.
Santanu – Writer, Bong Bachal
How does it feel like to have such a huge audience waiting for your posts eagerly on Facebook every day?
We like to connect with our audience and are continuously looking to benefit them. For example, a couple of days ago we posted about the chocolate cha from Tripti tea stall and that went viral. People kept calling us and messaging us to inquire about it.
What do you do apart from Bong Bachal?
I (Sayantan) am a college teacher, and no one at my college knows about it apart from a few colleagues. It is really amusing that my students don’t know about it because I draw so much inspiration from them and I can post anything and not get in trouble!
Santanu is a student as well as a faculty job. Chunilal is also a student. In fact, all of the members are either students or are working – and they create content whenever they find the time and right inspiration. As Chunilal very eloquently puts it, there’s no added pressure on anyone to create content, it’s all very… ‘cazz’ (casual)!
Chunilal – 2nd year B.Tech student, part of team Bong Bachal
What do you have to say about the meme/creative scene in Bengal?
We can’t say its amazing but can’t say it’s all down in the drains either. People generally don’t put in an effort to create content and are always chasing likes. This results in quantity, not quality.
One thing I’d like to say is regarding similar content. People often assume that the admins of meme pages are set out to plagiarise content from the masses. That is not true. We try to come up with new things and be innovative, but it is not possible for our every creative thought to be the first of its kind in the world. That is just insane. Most of these things are very common – for example, ‘I went to the rooftop today and it felt like my Darjeeling tour was sorted’ – anyone can say things like this in an adda! We try our best to attribute things when we find them but we deliberately do not copy content – because we do not monetize our Facebook page – hence there’s no point!
What’s next for Bong Bachal?
We would definitely try and continue to make more good content, and somewhere along the line, we want to make more video related stuff and even short films.
