“I must have flowers, always and always.” — Claude Monet
It seems one of the most chaotic hubs of the city has taken the saying literally. Sealdah station greets us every day with rush and bouts of delirium, but what waits outside the bustle (on the road to the left leading to Beliaghata) is pure bliss. The vibrancy of the colours and unhindered beauty will surely grab your attention. It’s not just a single nursery but a whole array of nurseries adorning both sides of the road. The market was gradually established by a few florists starting their businesses; with time, the businesses flourished and so did the businessmen.
The market has seen a whole new generation of demands and necessities arise only to be answered with flowers, and why wouldn’t it? The market is nearly a century old. Most of the shops have seen a hundred springs and can claim to provide all kinds of flowers that bloom in this world. The variety of roses which bloom under a single roof will simply stupefy you. Any rose lover will know how difficult it is to maintain Alba, Damask, China, Bourbon and Gallica in the same place, but these skilled shopkeepers have achieved that feat creating a spectacular rainbow of blooming colours right beside Sealdah Station. This floral tabernacle also has a lot of tiny yet interesting indoor plants. A few of the shops also keep some very rare medicinal herbs. Since everyone loves flowers, over the years these shops have been regularly catering to a multitude of households across the city. “Interesting part of this business is that you get to sell to all the types of people” says the owner of DooiBhai Nursery, possibly the oldest flower nursery in Kolkata.
Most of the shops have their own nursery compound at some distance. Some shops also sell various sorts of rare medicines and chemicals which are required to tend to rare plants and flowers. Seeds of rare, non-endemic plants can also be found at these nurseries, but most of the shop owner’s bring them only on pre-order basis. Although you can find seeds of soybeans, cotton, maize and other more common vegetables at a short notice.
From seasonal flowers to plants of high medicinal value, ranging from affordably priced to very expensive, everything can be found at this flower joint. This flower nursery in Kolkata is surely a pilgrimage for the true plant lovers of the city.
