Everyone loves a good detective story.  A crime gets committed, the police are confused, enters the detective (police, private or amateur), finds the clues, identifies the criminal & solves the crime.

Detective  stories are common almost in every literature. But, who are the major detectives in Bengali literature ?  Do you know all of them ?

Feluda :-

Feluda or Prodosh Chandra Mitra (uses the  name Pradosh.C.Mitter) is one of the most popular Bengali detectives around.

Creator – Satyajit Ray

Address – 21, Rajani Sen Road, Ballygunge, Kolkata

Debut – Feludar Goendagiri (Sandesh ,1965)

Sidekicks – Topshe (cousin), Lal Mohan Ganguly (debuted in Sonar Kella).

Byomkesh Bakshi :-

Byomkesh Bakshi  is another popular detective  in Bengali literature. This detective doesn’t like to be called as a “private detective” instead, he prefers himself to be called as a “Satyanweshi”i.e : “one who searches for the truth”.

Creator – Saradindu Bandyopadhyay.

Address – A mess house in Harrison Road, later shifts to Keyatala.

Debut – Satyanweshi (1932)

Sidekick – Ajit.

Kiriti Roy is an iconic Bengali detective character known for being stylish in nature, sporting a western look and a briar pipe hanging from his lips, despite being a Bengali at heart.

Debut – Kalo Bhromor

Raja Roychowdhury a.k.a. Kakababu  is one of the most popular characters in Bengali literature. He is not actually a detective  but a former director of Archaeological Survey Of India who loves going on adventures in various parts of the world. Having lost a leg while trying to save a friend of his, he walks with a crutch. Despite being disabled, he still possess great mental will & physical strength.

Creator – Sunil Gangyopadhyay.

Debut – Bhoyonkor Shundor.
